Supplepedia Series – Amino Acid Supplements

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2010

Whether or not you need to take amino acid supplements should be determined by your body’s needs. Read on to understand more about amino acids and to find out for yourself if you need to supplement your natural food intake.

Importance of Amino Acids
If you want to build muscles and maintain the healthy processes of the body, intake of a sufficient amount of amino acid is crucial. Amino acids are known to be the building blocks of protein. They play a crucial role in the synthesis of protein, regulation of cellular activity, and repair of tissues. Amino acids are also necessary to produce enzymes for different bodily processes and needs.

Sources of Amino Acids
The body needs 20 amino acids for protein synthesis. Without any one of these 20 amino acids, the body cannot produce protein and major physiological functions are negatively affected and if not treated, can result in a major breakdown of the human body.

The body is not capable of producing half of the 20 amino acids it needs to produce proteins. These amino acids are known as essential amino acids since they are needed to be supplied to the body from outside food sources.

Food sources of amino acids are divided into two groups: food group sources of complete protein and food group sources of incomplete protein.

Complete protein sources contain all the amino acids needed for protein production in the body. The best sources of complete protein are animal proteins. However, due to their high content of fat and cholesterol, they are not recommended for daily consumption.

Incomplete protein sources are fruits and vegetables. However, since they are not complete sources of protein – except for soybeans which is known as a complete source of all amino acids – fruits and vegetables need to be combined with other amino acid sources. This is where amino acid supplements come in.

Final Word
Since the body cannot store excess amino acids and one cannot ensure to partake of complete protein food sources on a daily basis, amino acid supplements are necessary to supply the body with essential amino acids to maintain good health.
